Avast! 5.0 personal review

26 Jan 2010 by BradB, No Comments »

I must say that I am very impressed with Awil’s latest release of Avast! free antivirus. I have been using and testing it for a couple of days now with great results. First, I’d like to list some of the most notable and useful changes:

  • No reboot required after initial install
  • Registration is done within the software (no email or long codes required)
  • The interface has been completely re-worked (no more confusing silver stereo thing)
  • More shields

The change that impresses me the most is the speed. Avast! has always been as fast as it was effective, and this version is no exception. Not only is the install streamlined, but in most cases I haven’t even seen a single bit of computer slow down after the install. The program seems to update more quickly and start with the computer even faster then before. The interface also seems to open more  promptly.

Now, keep in mind these claims are anecdotal and in no way reflect some scientific benchmark. All I can offer is what I’ve seen so far from installs on my computers as well as customer machines. So far (as you can tell) I’m very satisfied.

Now for some technical features to note:

Avast! now offers real time line graphs to show activity in each of its shields. This can be helpful in diagnosing problems you may encounter with infections or the antivirus program itself.

Another new feature is the behavioral shield. This handy little protection monitors your computer for possible unknown viruses and spyware by way of their actions on your computer. So even if you become infected with a virus that Avast! doesn’t know about yet, you are still protected. While this isn’t a 100% cure for new and unknown threats, your chances have just become much better. Most of our customers will know the great benefit in this feature!

Last but not least, there is the silent/gaming mode. For you gamers out there, you can avoid any pop-ups that may interrupt your gaming with this mode. There is no need to turn off your Avast! antivirus in order to have a smooth (infection free) gaming experience.

I’d like to say that many of these features, while new to Avast!, are mainstays with other antivirus programs. Avast! has adopted the features to make its already great product even better. The best part is that even with more features Avast! manages to keep and improve its speed. In my book that makes Avast! 5.0 the essential free antivirus solution for any computer.
